A big shame: congress elections in Colombia

The most peaceful elections in years, elections for Congress in Colombia on the 14th of March, as even United Nations said. True, the FARC didn’t destroy bridges or energy towers, but in the meantime complaints about cheating and buying votes were numerous (more than 300 at the end of the day, Caracol Radio said).  The political party PIN, hereditary of the parapoliticians, has become the fourth party in Congess, before Cambio Radical and the Polo Democrático Alternativo. The only positive thing is that the new Partido Verde (Green Party, conformed by the three former mayors of Bogotá Antanas Mockus, Luis Eduardo Garzón and Enrique Peñalosa) won four seats, apparently without buying one vote, a special phenomenon in this country. Will Ingrid Betancourt take revenge?

It will not last very long anymore before Íngrid Betancourt, Colombia’s most famous FARC hostage, will publish her book on the years she spent as a FARC prisoner. Since her liberation in July 2008 (Operation Jaque), several people have dared to criticize this woman, who especially in Europe is considered as a heroine. The last one has published his own book these days: Juan Carlos Lecompte, Betancourt’s latest ex-husband. If Betancourt is writing a book that is similar to her Rage in the Heart (2001), she will be merciless with her critics. (more…)

FARC are dinosaurs or Piedad 13

Two of 23 families of the policemen and militaries who are still suffering as a hostage of the FARC in Colombia have some relief. The guerrilla sent them proofs that their beloved are still alive. But they are only two. Piedad Córdoba and her Colombians for Peace say that other proofs are on their way. Let’s hope so and let’s hope that the army doesn’t intercept them. So that other families also can breathe more freely. But the most important thing is that those poor men get free and NOW. (more…)

“It  was a blatant stupidity having accompanied Ingrid on her journey to San Vicente del Caguan”, former FARC hostage Clara Rojas told the Spanish press agency EFE. According to the press agency, Rojas states that in the book she is going to publish about her kidnapping in February 2002. The book is expected to be published in Colombia mid April. (more…)
