Travelling in Chávez’s country

When I arrived in Venezuela the 8th of June, president Chávez was already in Cuba, to talk with his friends Fidel and Raúl Castro. He’s still there, I’m back in Colombia and wish to return to that strange country, that is Venezuela where many complain about political and economic paralysis and where the poor are glad with a president who gives them a job, free education and healthcare. Two floors of my 8 floor hotel in Caracas were crowded with flood victims. Measure of the government. Is that bad? There are many sides to the Chávez story. (more…)

The only picture I took in Istanbul

When I was in Istanbul in May I got ill. Thought it was a flu, but it didn’t get better. Back in Holland, in the hospital to do blood examinations, I heard I had malaria. Strange, I had been in malaria areas in Colombia, but one always thinks those things happen to others. I couldn’t do anything but accept this disease that ruined my stay in Istanbul and Holland. I have been travelling in the eastern highlands of Bolivia for a week now and it is clear that the population still loves its president Evo Morales. Here there is a big concentration of the Aymara population. That is where the president has a big support. It is much harder fore himn in the east and north, eg the Santa Cruz and Pando provinces, where politicians are looking for independence (more…)

My hope to find more about Che Guevara during my holiday in Argentina is not lost. It appears that he moved away with his parents from Rosario because he suffered from asthma.
