Child soldiers in Colombia

Colombia is the Congo of the region, was the headline of an article by the country’s daily El Espectador today. The recruitment of child soldiers is increasing, according to the newspaper. Guerrillas as well as former and new paramilitaries recruit(ed) child soldiers. It is one of the worst crimes against humanity that exist. Children are forced to fight and murder and the girls are often  used as sex slaves.

El Espectador interviewed a prosecutor of the International Criminal Court who thought it very possible that after the Congolese warlord Lubanga, Colombian warlords will be trialed for the recruitment of child soldiers.

In 2003 Human Rights Watch published a report about child soldiers called You’ll learn not to cry. According to this human rights organisation about 11.000 children and youngsters were fighting in one of the illegal groups in Colombia.

The subjet child soldiers is especially associated with Africa (Congo, Uganda, Sierra Leone), but in Colombia it is a big problem as well. The movie Blood Diamond offers a good impression about the seriousness of the phenomenon.

i DON’T UNDERSTAND WHY THE HUMAN RIGHTS DON’T SEE THE ABUSE OF LAS FARC WITH CHILDREN. THEY USE THEM AS EARLY AS 9 OR 10 YEARS OLD BOYS AND GIRLS. THE GIRLS ARE USED LIKE PROSTITUTES FOR THE BIG SHOTS AND FOR THE RASOS ALSO. WEN THEY ARE PREGNANT THEY TAKE THEM TO CASUCHAS WERE THE HAVE A ABORTION. IF THEY DON’T ABORT THEM THEY TAKE THE CHILDREN TO FAMILIES WHO LIVES CLOSE TO THEM UNICEF OR RIGHTS OF THE CHILD IGNORED THIS SITUATION AND NO ONE TALKS ABOUT THE DEGRADATION OF HUMAN BEINGS. LAS FARC TAKE THIS CHILDREN FROM THEIR FAMILIES AND REPLACE THE TOYS FOR A FUSIL. THEY OBLIGATE THEM TO KILL PEOPLE LIKE TO KILL CUCARACHAS TRANFORM THEM IN MONSTER WITHOUT CONCIENCIOUS..

They do pay attention to the problem, Mary. Human Rights Watch wrote a big report on it: You will learn not to cry (2003), and also Warchild pays much atention to it. They invited the Dutch minister of development cooperation, Bert Koenders, to Colombia in order to get to know the problem of child soldiers in the country. And it’s not only the FARC, all the groups did and do it. Also the (new) paramilitaries.
